Tipping Recommendations

In Japan, it’s not common to tip for services provided in bars, cafes, restaurants, taxis and hotels. It might be considered appropriate to tip a private guide, interpreter or personal attendant accustomed to the practices of tourists. Note that if you decide to tip, it’s customary to put in in an envelope.

Cultural Notes & Local Etiquette

Respect shoe removal policies (temples, castles, other historical buildings, some restaurants, traditional ryokan).
When visiting temples, dress modestly, remove shoes and respect quiet and photography rules.
Ask before photographing locals and shrines.
Behave with respect and patience in public spaces.

Entry Requirements

Visa
For Canadian and US citizens, a tourist visa is not required for stays for up to 90 days in Japan.

Passport
You should always make sure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months past the dates of travel.

Electricity & Devices

A universal all-in-one travel adapter (can be purchased from retailers like Amazon) will allow you to plug in and charge most electronic devices. Most electronic devices have built-in converters. However, if you plan to use North American appliances like hair dryers, flat irons or curling irons you will need a converter.

In Japan there are two associated plug types, types A and B. Type A plugs have two flat parallel pins and type B plugs have two flat parallel pins and a grounding pin. Japan operates on a 100V supply voltage and 50/60Hz.
